Salmon Chowder Recipe

3/28/2020

Recently I made salmon chowder and it turned out so great I can't help but share with all of you!  Being in the PNW, fresh seafood, and Seattle chowder is everywhere, so it was fun to make this myself too!
Enjoy!
Picture
Picture
  1. In a large pot start heating up 3 tbs butter, ½ cup chopped celery, ½ cup chopped onion, 5 minced garlic cloves (I like a lot), salt and pepper (don’t do too much salt yet).  Let this all cook for a few minutes
  2. Add to pot: 14.5 can of chicken broth, ½ cup peeled & chopped carrots, 1 cup chopped up potatoes (I used the small rainbow medley ones and left the skin on), some fresh dill  (Note - save about half a cup of broth for later)
  3. Bring pot to a boil, then turn it down, put lid on, and let it simmer for 30min
  4. While this is simmering... Salt and pepper a salmon filet – wrap in tin foil and stick in oven at 350 (pull out once its cooked through ~ about 15 min)
  5. Add to the pot: 2 cups half and half, flake the salmon with a fork and add it all, 14.5oz can of cream style corn
  6. Let the chowder cook for 10 min on medium (until potatoes everything are soft enough)
  7. Add salt to taste
  8. If you want it thicker… take the broth you saved and mix it with ¼ cup cornstarch (mix until there are no clumps), then pour into the pot slowly
  9. Pour into bowls and garnish with fresh dill & chopped green onions

How I do a full Barre Routine in a tiny apartment

1/29/2020

After moving back to Seattle, I found myself going from a house with lots of space and open areas to a tiny apartment that I all of the sudden had to fit all of my belongings into.  Being that I work from home, I love being able to do at home workouts on my lunch hour. but suddenly I had no space for gym equipment.  I tried out Fluidity Barre and was shocked at how easy it was to set it up (less than a minute) as well as fold up and store under my couch!

I was also shocked at everything the system came with and what great quality it was.  Besides the barre (solid wood!) and mat, it came with several DVDs of workouts, a ball, bands, a pump for the ball, and a healthy eating guide.

Review of Poly LED acne device

7/9/2019

Growing up acne was never a big issue for me.  Then I hit 25 and moved to South Carolina (hello humidity) and things took a quick turn.  Fast forward 5 years later and I was still dealing with spurts of adult acne which is frustrating.  My life is super busy and stress seems to make my skin very upset.

Poly LED offered to let me try their new anti-acne device, the only cordless LED device on the market, and I was excited to see what the results would be.  The following is a before and after photo after using the light for 1.5 weeks.

BEFORE

Picture

1.5 WEEKS LATER

Picture
Overall I feel like it definitely worked for my skin (the blue light kills the bacteria and the red light helps to heal scars and marks).  Moreover, now that my skin has cleared up, I can notice a difference if I don't use it for a couple days as acne starts wanting to emerge again.   Luckily this is cordless & lightweight so I can bring it anywhere as a tool in my quest for natural, healthy skin free of harsh chemicals and ingredients that can age you (despite what they advertise).

Review of Jose Eber Hair Tools

7/9/2019

So I had to leave my blow dryer and a thousand other things behind when I moved across the country this year.  I was okay with it because I really don't like using heat on my hair as it can be damaging.  However I really missed being able to dry off that last section when I need to get out the door or start getting ready.

I tested out these 2 gorgeous tools from Jose Eber - the blow dryer and the wet/dry hair straightener.  Keep reading to hear why I love them, and get a 70% off coupon!
Picture
The Direct Air Blow dryer has 3 different heads, 2 of which direct the air in a strict line which makes drying super quick and efficient!   Its also surprisingly very lightweight which means I wont feel guilty traveling with it.

The Infrared 2" Wet / Dry Hair straightener can be used on wet or dry hair and is designed to minimize damage.  Lately I've found this is really nice to use about an hour after I get out of the shower and want to spend 1-2 minutes smoothing and finishing drying my hair with a couple comb-thrus of this tool.  Makes my day a little easier and I can say goodbye to the "messy bun" and be okay wearing my hair down when I don't have time to style it.  Another way I love to use this is (at the same time, hour post shower) to run it through my hair and then wrap the hair around curlers for 10 minutes - the result is perfect beach waves with only 2 minutes of my time.

CBD – My new daily favorite

9/19/2018

Lately my anxiety has been out of this world.  I work full time, run two side businesses on my own, own two homes, property manage multiple tenants, and do all the cleaning and yardwork at my house.  When I have free time, I was finding myself getting anxious and irritated rather than enjoying it.  A friend showed up late?  Instant anxiety about wasting my time.  Roommates never cleaning?  Anxiety for a week.  Not the kind of person I wanted to be.  When I was in college I had a doctor give me prescription pills to calm me down when my anxiety got the best of me, but that I stopped taking them after hearing about all the addictive traits and adverse effects these medicines can have.
I received two products from Every Day Optimal CBD and the timing could NOT have been better, as I found myself in a constant state of anxiety and sleeplessness that week.  The two products (CBD gummy bears, and CBD oil) are made from hemp and have loads of benefits, without the THC or the high you would get from marijuana, and because of this, CBD is legal in all 50 states.   I’ve been taking one gummy bear every morning so that I have a steady stream of CBD in my system to keep anxiety and irritations at bay.  Overall, I find myself a bit calmer throughout the day and less likely to get anxious or upset over something.  I have also been taking half a dropper to a full dropper of the CBD oil anytime I find myself getting a bit anxious or before I go to bed if I feel like my mind is racing and I won’t sleep well.  The oil has an instantaneous calming effect and I don’t think I can go anywhere without it.  Speaking of, we just had a hurricane evacuation here in Charleston and I spent 5 days in St. Petersburg Florida.  My CBD was in my top 5 items on my packing list!
Picture
Picture
Leave a comment below if you have any questions for me, but I wanted to share this review with all of you!  A natural solution to anxiety and insomnia is something I have been looking for for a long time, as I try to avoid prescription medicine at all costs!

As a caution I also wanted to warn you about ordering from suppliers on Amazon, which is what I had intended to do before I found Every Day Optimal.  The “CBD oil” on amazon markets itself as CBD but in fact it is just hemp oil with no CBD in it.  It is important to find a supplier who makes clean, pure, and authentic products and I’m so happy I found one on my first try.  Every Day Optimal also offers CBD in pill form, gum, e-liquid, and more.  Next time I place an order I’m also going to order their pet version of CBD oil and give it to my psycho cat who keeps me up all night.  I’ll report back 😉

My Hair

5/2/2018

I get asked these questions all the time, so I thought I would finally make a post about it!

My Natural Hair:  A dark blonde, super fine, thin

What do I do to it:  Highlights (bleach) and a Revlon gloss with either purple, blue, or titanium in it to cancel out any yellow and add shine.

Extensions:  I have used tape-in extensions for the last 3.5 years to make my hair a little thicker.  I was getting them done in a salon for over a year (Hot Heads) but I ultimately felt that I was spending too much money, and my hair wasn't being treated the way I wanted it to be.  Removing the extensions was done quickly and was pulling out some of my already thin hair.  I ultimately decided to start buying them myself and doing them at home.

At home vs. Salon: in the salon, I was paying for new extensions every 5 months (about $500), and $100 every 8 weeks to remove them and put them back in.  We would reuse them a few times.   At home, I spend about $60 on extensions every 8 weeks and remove them and replace them myself.  Since I'm saving so much money, I never reuse them, and opt to have brand new ones each time.
Picture
Photo: Nicole Mickle

What To Buy...

Here are some of the extensions and products I use, on Amazon.  Enjoy!
  • Ombre Brown to Blonde Extensions.  I either get 20 or 22 inch.  This is by FAR the best color I have found after trying many different brands and colors on Amazon.   The others were much brassier and did not match the photos.  I only use one pack because I just want my hair to be a little thicker.  However in the salon she was using 2 packs on me.  I found this to be a bit too much to manage for my personal taste.
  • Tape Extension Remover.  You'll need this to get them off easily.
  • Clarifying Shampoo.  Use this a few times after you remove your extensions, before you put in new ones. To get off all the residue.

Bali was such an amazing experience.  I especially loved my airbnb in Sanur, as it was away from all the tourists and oh so cute.  I felt like I had a little piece of the jungle to myself.   Check out some photos lounging around this place in one of Strange Bikini's awesome handmade pieces!

I recently built a new home in Charleston, SC with the help of Southeastern builders!  I wanted to keep everything very bright and clean so that most of the color would come from my style and belongings.  Take a look around and let me know what you think, I'm in love!

Susan & the Americano

7/13/2017

This is my second time shooting Susan & I can't get enough of this girl. She's so much fun & truly a pleasure to photograph. This time we went to the Americano, a trendy little diner located in the heart of Mount Pleasant. Every corner turned into the perfect space with the prettiest colors. The green trees, colorful flowers & bright hanging lights made the best background for Susan.

I recently had the opportunity to visit Sam Rueter, a Charleston based artist, in her studio located in the Redux Contemporary Art building. It was so cool to experience first hand how Sam creates these stunning abstract paintings. Her careful choice of color, unique brushstrokes, and strong focus indicated just how passionate about she is about her work. I highly recommend checking out Sam's incredible pieces either at Redux or through her online shop!

The inspiration for this shoot was my black hat from Free People, and this brick wall.  That is it.  But man did we get a ton of great pics!  Check out the gorgeous Susan who strolled some little Charleston alleys with me last week!

One thing I've been doing more of lately is shooting women and every time I do, I realize how in love with it I am!  I'm opening up shoots for women of all ages, lets go find some light and make you feel beautiful in your own skin, no matter where you are at in life!  Contact me to book a session!  Hello@LindseyO.com

I've also been getting questions about doing 1 on 1 photo mentoring to teach people how to use their DSLR and shoot in manual.  I'm bringing my session back, if you're interested, check it out here!

Why eating collagen powder does not put collagen into your wrinkles

3/15/2017

OK, so before we dig into why this new "trend" of everyone eating collagen powder will not take away your wrinkles.. lets talk about where this rumor came from..

Social Media

People have the ability to choose what is displayed about them on social media, and can create a whole life or business separate from who they actually are, and are all of the sudden "experts" on everything.  It is all perception.  The problem lies with creating a FALSE reality.  For instance, there are many "businesses" out there that are not businesses at all.  They are not paying taxes, they may not even be generating income, and in many cases are not qualified.  These are the accounts that are shaping decisions for many consumers and this can be misleading.

You will see a trend among many "fitness" or "model" accounts promoting this new "collagen powder" to drink.   Some of these accounts were paid to promote this, and others are just following the trends.  The claims are that this magic drink will improve the health of your skin and take away / prevent wrinkles.  If any of these accounts actually had a degree in nutrition, medicine, or science they would know this is simply not true... so let's clear up WHY :)

Why it won't work (the science)

When you ingest collagen you are ingesting a type of protein.  All proteins are composed of amino acids, and are broken down into amino acids in your stomach.  Collagen is not going to be digested as collagen, and used by your skin, it will be digested as amino acids just like all other proteins.

Marketers are preying on consumers hoping to sell that putting collagen in your body will create more collagen for your body but a little bit of scientific research says this simply is not true.
Picture
So, is collagen powder bad for you?  No, but it is simply providing you with amino acids which you can get from other forms of protein as well including meat, dairy, etc.  Save your bank account from splurging on this super expensive protein and get yourself a well balanced diet!  These "collagen powders" are super expensive compared to other forms of protein.. save your money and treat yo self to that new bikini you've been eyeing!

If you're still stuck on the whole collagen in / collagen out theory, save yourself some money and buy a gelatin supplement or eat some jello :) yummmmm!
