Puerto Rico during the holidays

This year we went to San Juan, Puerto Rico from Christmas to New Years.  

Here is what I learned:

• The Holidays are HUGE here!  Christmas is celebrated well into January, everything is decorated, and NYE is a gigantic party.  
• Visit "Old San Juan" and you will see forts from hundreds of years ago, tall colorful buildings, and all along the beach. 
• Zip lining is not as scary as it looks.
• BUNZ burgers are amazing.
• They use the US dollar, speak English (and Spanish), you don't need a passport to get there, and your phone works great (I have Sprint)!
• The new years eve celebrations are at the big hotels like La Concha and the Marriot.  You will need to talk to them about getting a ticket. 
• Candado is the place to stay in San Juan if you're looking for lots to do. 
• Flying home new years morning is not fun when you were up all night drinking champagne!
• If I could do it again.. I would split my time between San Juan and Fajardo.  From Fajardo you can take cheap day trips to other nearby islands very quickly by boat (ex. the Virgin Islands).  Getting to Fajardo from San Juan is pretty expensive, so staying here for a part of your trip would allow you to see a lot more of Puerto Rico and the surrounding Caribbean.
